In-Focus: International Day Draws Thousands to Concordia Language Villages
Visiting China, Germany, and Spain in one day. That’s what it’s like during International Day at Concordia Language Villages in Bemidji. We explain how participants learn different cultures through activities, food, and of course language.
International Day started with a colorful parade of flags. There are 11 language camps or villages at this year’s event, and each village brought its own unique flare. And of course, there was no shortage of authentic food from their respective countries.
Celebrating its 44th year, International Day is about bringing the villages together. Food and games offered participants a great experience, but speaking the language provided a deeper understanding about the culture. This year’s theme is “Speak to the Heart,” which was inspired by civil rights activist Nelson Mandela. Mandela believed that if you talked to a person in his own language, the message would go to his heart.
