Northwoods Adventure-The Big Whiff

The Miracle League allows people to play ball, who otherwise would not have the chance. The league’s fundraiser offered a similar opportunity Saturday in Brainerd at the Big Whiff Wiffle Ball Tournament.
The Big Whiff attracted people of all ages and a colorful group of characters. Personalities shine through the team names like Whiff Wizards, Sons of Pitches, and the Super Power Ticklers, who play for more than just fun. Several team members are also family members of Jacob Lindholm, who has Autism.
The event raises money for the Miracle League, in which Jacob played this summer. His mother, Jen Lindholm, appreciates all the people offering support at Saturday’s tournament. Seven teams played in the tournament that varies greatly from baseball.
The field is extremely narrow. Nobody runs the bases. Hits in general, prove elusive, which may be why the tournament is called the “Big Whiff.”
The black rectangle serves as the strike zone, and a batter needs to watch six balls to earn a walk. This gives the hurlers a chance to throw plenty of junk pitches, like the rise ball.
No matter the strategy, the end result remains constant… a lot of swings, misses, and smiles.
