A Redby man has been arrested for assaulting a man 2 miles west of Bemidji according to the Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office. 23-year-old Orland James Spears was taken into custody early this morning after stabbing a 71-year-old man at his house in the 1200 block of Averi Circle.
According to the Beltrami County Sheriff, after stealing a car from Red Lake, Spears drove to the man’s neighborhood in Grant Vally Township. Spears knocked on the door of the man’s home and asked to use the telephone. After the suspect completed the call, authorities say Spears broke through the door and stabbed him twice in the chest before fleeing the scene.
The Beltrami County Sheriff’s Communications Division sent out a CodeRED alert to advise neighboring citizens to be on the look out for the suspect. Around 5:00AM, the Beltrami County Communications Center began receiving phone calls from citizens in the neighborhood reporting the suspect walking around homes near the area. Deputies arrived on the scene and entered a residence where the suspect had just entered the garage. The suspect refused commands to lower his knife and surrender. The suspect was then apprehended by a police K-9.
Spears was arrested and placed in custody at the Beltrami County Jail. The investigation will be presented to the Beltrami County Attorney’s office for consideration of assault and burglary charges.
